Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding

Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding

Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding (DUB) is a condition characterized by abnormal bleeding from the uterus, often unrelated to normal menstruation or any structural abnormalities. It is typically caused by hormonal imbalances that disrupt the menstrual cycle.

In Ayurveda, DUB is often linked to imbalances in the Pitta dosha, which governs heat and metabolism in the body. It may also involve Vata dosha, which controls movement and flow, and Kapha dosha, which influences stability and structure. Ayurvedic treatment aims to restore balance among these doshas through a combination of dietary adjustments, herbal remedies, and lifestyle changes.

Ayurvedic Perspective on DUB

  • Causes (Nidana):
    • Excess consumption of Pitta-aggravating foods (spicy, sour, salty foods).
    • Emotional stress or mental strain.
    • Overexertion or lack of adequate rest.
    • Hormonal fluctuations due to improper lifestyle.
  • Symptoms (Lakshana):
    • Heavy menstrual bleeding or spotting between periods.
    • Irregular cycles.
    • Weakness or fatigue.
    • Pain or discomfort in the lower abdomen.

Ayurvedic Treatment Approaches

  1. Dietary Modifications:
    • Include cooling and Pitta-pacifying foods like cucumbers, watermelon, and coconut water.
    • Avoid spicy, fried, and fermented foods.
    • Incorporate foods rich in iron (e.g., dates, spinach) to combat anemia caused by heavy bleeding.
  2. Herbal Remedies:
    • Ashoka (Saraca asoca): Regulates menstrual cycles and reduces bleeding.
    • Lodhra (Symplocos racemosa): Balances hormones and strengthens the uterus.
    • Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus): Acts as a uterine tonic and supports hormonal balance.
    • Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia): Boosts immunity and balances Pitta.
    • Triphala: Detoxifies and improves digestion, which supports hormonal health.
  3. Panchakarma Therapies:
    • Virechana (Purgation): Eliminates excess Pitta from the body.
    • Basti (Medicated enema): Balances Vata and improves reproductive health.
  4. Lifestyle Recommendations:
    • Practice stress management techniques like yoga, pranayama, and meditation.
    • Maintain a regular sleep schedule.
    • Avoid strenuous activities during menstruation.
  5. Specific Ayurvedic Formulations:
    • Ashokarishta: A fermented herbal preparation for uterine health.
    • Kumaryasava: Effective in regulating menstrual cycles.
    • Chandraprabha Vati: Used to manage hormonal imbalances and reproductive health.

Preventive Tips:

  • Follow a routine (Dinacharya) to maintain hormonal balance.
  • Stay hydrated and avoid dehydration, which can aggravate Pitta.
  • Regularly consume cooling herbal teas, such as fennel or coriander tea.
