Vaginal Candidiasis

Vaginal candidiasis, also known as a yeast infection, is a common fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of Candida, a type of yeast. The most common species responsible is Candida albicans. This condition affects the vaginal area and can cause discomfort, itching, and abnormal discharge.

Causes of Vaginal Candidiasis

  1. Imbalance in Vaginal Flora:
    • Use of antibiotics that kill beneficial bacteria like Lactobacillus.
  2. Hormonal Changes:
    • Pregnancy, oral contraceptives, or menopause can increase susceptibility.
  3. Weakened Immunity:
    • Conditions like diabetes, HIV/AIDS, or immunosuppressive therapies.
  4. Lifestyle Factors:
    • Wearing tight or synthetic clothing.
    • High sugar diet promoting yeast growth.
    • Poor hygiene or excessive douching.

Symptoms of Vaginal Candidiasis

  • Intense itching in the vaginal and vulvar region.
  • Thick, white, cottage cheese-like discharge.
  • Redness and swelling around the vaginal opening.
  • Pain during urination or intercourse.
  • Persistent burning sensation in the vaginal area.

Ayurvedic Perspective on Vaginal Candidiasis

In Ayurveda, vaginal candidiasis is often linked to an imbalance of Kapha dosha and the accumulation of toxins (Ama) in the body. It may also be associated with Upapluta Yonivyapad, a condition described in classical Ayurvedic texts that corresponds to infections of the vaginal area.
